MEET THE LPOC EXPERTS

Meet with The Listed Property Owners’ Club experts and gather information about buying or owning a listed property, unauthorised works, surveyance, grants, maintenance, mortgages and laws. There will also be specific advice and expertise available for owners or managers of flats/apartments within a listed building, including management companies, and commercial listed buildings.

CONSERVATION OFFICERS

Craig Wilson, the Club’s Scotland based Conservation Advisor, will lead a team of of independent conservation officers within the exhibition who will happily discuss any plans you may have for altering or extending your property. We all know the process of obtaining permission for such work can be very lengthy and a free one-to-one conversation will help you better understand the obligations and requirements. Remember to bring plenty of photographs and sketches of your property with you.

Obtaining Listed Building Consent can be a challenging and complex task. Learn what it means for you as as your property is listed and you want to undertake refurbishment or building works, and what you will need to do to obtain Listed Building Consent or Planning permission.

10:00 – 10:30 Graham Simpson MSP
Graham Simpson MSP
Graham Simpson MSP, Shadow Minister for Housing, will be discussing the energy efficiency challenges for owners, and the need for reforms to make improvements easier. He’ll also touch on his work to protect and support historic tenements.

10:30 – 11:15 Damp Control
Smith & Garratt
An unmissable opportunity to get to grips with damp in the company of a specialist surveyor. Hugh Garratt of Smith & Garratt will provide practical guidance on detecting, diagnosing and dealing with damp. He will provide examples of penetrating damp, rising damp, condensation and leak detection… bring photographs of your own examples and join in the discussion!

11:15 – 12:15 Ask the Experts
Our Ask the Experts panel will be on hand to discuss a multitude of topics regarding owning a listed home. Th e panel will be led by LPOC’s Conservation Advisor Craig Wilson and he will be joined by a Historic Environment Scotland representative, Chartered Surveyor Hugh Garratt, Conservation Architect Michael Leybourne, Property Lawyer Colin Hamilton, LPOC’s VAT Advisor Dave Brown and Insurance Advisor Jim Sales. Come armed with your pressing issues and concerns and join in the debate.

About Craig Wilson, chair of the panel: For the past 10 years Craig has worked solely as a local authority Listed Buildings and Conservation Officer in Moray. He has dealt with varying and interesting caseloads including an ancient mill which was in danger of collapse and the refurbishment of a Category A farm which had been vacant for 30 years.

15:45 – 16:30 How to Internally Insulate Solid Stone and Brick Walls

The talk will highlight the necessity of moisture management, including best practice examples using breathable materials to ensure building structural safety and longevity.
