Established in 1993, The Listed Property Owners’ Club is Britain’s only dedicated advice service for owners of listed buildings.

The Listed Property Owners’ Club (LPOC) helps members get the most from their homes by providing detailed advice, information and support for just about every conceivable issue associated with ownership.

The Club was started over 25 years ago by Peter Anslow, who learnt a tremendous amount about owning a listed building from buying a 17th century Kentish barn in the 1960s (which is still being lovingly restored to this day!). By the time Peter’s son and daughter had also both bought listed buildings, he had learnt enough to pass on his knowledge and LPOC began.

Any problems that arise with owning a listed building have been, without exception, lack of knowledge and it was on this basis that we structured the Club”, Peter says.

There aren’t many questions that arise that we haven’t experienced before. Whilst we tend to respond to these directly, when something new or particularly tricky arises we act as a signpost to the expert who can respond with the appropriate advice. This specialist advice is all part of the membership fee.

There are approximately half a million listed homes in the UK, all of which are subject to strict regulations on planning, alterations and maintenance. However, legislation doesn’t stand still and owners of listed homes need to be kept informed about their rights and responsibilities. This is the primary purpose of LPOC.

Peter’s passion for heritage and helping listed building owners extended to parliament in 2013 as he began the Political Campaign for Owner’s Rights, following a difficult few years that included the VAT relief on approved alterations being scrapped. LPOC continue to lobby Westminster for a reduction in VAT for work on listed buildings to 5%.

Meet the experts

Peter Bell – LPOC Conservation Advisor

Peter spent 27 years as conservation officer in local government and has a hands on approach to building conservation having restored his medieval farmhouse and family home. He helps LPOC members with technical enquiries on a day-to-day basis.

Craig Wilson – LPOC Scotland Conservation Advisor

For the past 9 years has worked solely as a local authority Listed Buildings and Conservation Officer in Scotland. He can offer members impartial advice on technical and planning matters, affording you the opportunity to talk through your ideas and needs.

David Brown – LPOC VAT Advisor

Dave Brown has over 40 years’ experience, both with HMRC and as a VAT consultant. Dave has been VAT adviser to The Listed Property Owners Club, since 1997. He is able to provide comprehensive information relating to potential VAT relief that still exists.

Suzanne Bowman – LPOC Legal Advisor

Suzanne is a solicitor and partner at law firm Adams & Remers LLP.  She is a specialist in listed buildings and residential and rural property. Suzanne is widely regarded as an expert in listed property issues and is on hand to advise LPOC members.

Alex Ward – LPOC Insurance Advisor

Alex has been working with LPOC Insurance Services for the last four years and has a wealth of knowledge around insuring listed properties. He can offer tailored advice to listed property owners and has access to a range of insurance solutions to address specific concerns or requirements.
