The Property
Swan Corner House is Grade II Listed. Formerly two 17th century cottages (and the even earlier surviving wall of a third), it is a property of great authentic character. At some point, it was an Inn known as The Running Horse (used in conjunction with the Swan Hotel Coaching Inn over the road). Later, it was converted into a chemist plus residence and it remained so for 140 years. The interior walls of the cottages are constructed of oak beams and lathe and plaster, the exterior walls are Fittleworth stone with flint infill as well as tile hung elevations.
The property has been restored over the years with care to keep the intrinsic character but also make it completely useful in a modern world. For example, all road-facing windows have modern secondary glazing so any noise is radically reduced and gas central heat retained.
An unusual feature is a restored well, possibly once communal, now incorporated into the entrance hall.
The house is a stone’s throw from the River Arun with historic listed Swan Bridge, now foot bridge, and a much-utilised boat ramp popular for water sports.
The layout has been adapted since it was a chemist plus residence into a four-bedroom house with kitchen, dining room, sitting room, hall and inner hall which leads to a snug and a home office or shops/bedrooms.
The oak-panelled sitting room has the largest working fireplace with log fire box and fire back. The dining room, one of the original cottages, is fitted with a German wood burner, oak flooring, and has French doors opening onto the garden.
The house has a tennis court sized south facing walled garden mainly laid to lawn and has a unique elevated post and beam pavilion, power and light connected.
A newer structure contains a room that can be used as a gardening room, and a separate larger space that can be used as a studio or workshop. This space has its own kitchenette, shower room, and a cloakroom with toilet and basin.
Upstairs in the historic house are four bedrooms, one en-suite, and a large family bathroom (converted from a former maid’s bedroom), with airing cupboard and spa bath and a large window overlooking the garden. The largest bedroom (1) has a brick and stone working fireplace with windows facing three directions, enjoying beautiful views across the Brooks to the South Downs in the distance. The en-suite bedroom (2) has oak flooring and looks out on the garden. Bedroom (3) has a built in wardrobe.
